What is the purpose of auto insurance?
In the event of an accident, automobile insurance is intended to protect you from financial loss. In the contract between you, the insured, and the insurance company you agree to pay the monthly premium and the insurance provider pledges to pay your loses as stated in the policy.
Coverage under an auto policy includes expenses related to property, liability, and medical claims. Policies, which run from six months to a year, are renewable. Drivers are insured against the theft of their car, damage to the vehicle, liability for property damage or bodily injury, and medical expenses connected with the treatment of injuries and rehabilitation.
The Basic Auto Policy
Your policy may include up to six areas of coverage, each of which is priced separately. These are collision, property damage liability, bodily injury liability, medical payments, comprehensive, and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
Collision: This covers loss to an insured person's own vehicle caused by its collision with another vehicle or object. Additionally it covers damage due to potholes or flipping your car. The higher your deductible, which usually ranges from $250 to $1,000, the lower your premium. Your insurance company will pay for the damages to your vehicle regardless of who is at fault. If the other driver is at fault your insurance company will try to get reimbursement from the other driver's insurance company. If they are successful your deductible will be paid back to you.
