AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE GLOSSARY

CONTINUOUS COVERAGE OR CONTINUOUS LIABILITY INSURANCE: This is the continuous length of time your vehicle has been insured.

COVERED PERSON: These are the individuals, such as named insured, spouse, children, etc., which are insured by a policy.

CUSTOMIZED EQUIPMENT/SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: Equipment and items not included in standard automobile insurance policies, such as special electronic equipment and customized interior features.

DEDUCTIBLE: When a loss occurs this is the designated out-of-pocket sum paid by an insured person, with the remainder of the loss being paid by the insurance company.

DEFENSIVE DRIVER COURSE: These courses, which are offered through or approved by a state's Department of Motor Vehicles, are designed to improve driving skills and may qualify a consumer for discounts on their automobile premiums. Classes taken connected for moving violations are ineligible.

DRIVE-OTHER-CAR ENDORSEMENT: This coverage, which is optional, extends coverage to non-owned vehicles operated by the insured.

DRIVER EDUCATION: A course with at least 30 hours of professional classroom instruction that is accredited by the state.

DRIVER TRAINING: A course with a minimum of six hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction that is accredited by the state.

EFFECTIVE DATE/INCEPTION DATE: The date on which insurance policy coverage starts.
